What a cookie actually is

A cookie is a small piece of data saved on your device when you visit a site. It lets the site recognise things between visits, or across pages in the same visit, such as choices you’ve made or how you’ve used it.

Cookies that keep the site working

We store a small essential flag that remembers whether you’ve accepted or declined optional cookies, so the banner doesn’t reappear on every page. It’s not possible to switch this off, because the site depends on it to function.

Cookies that need your consent first

If you agree to them through the cookie banner, we run Google Analytics 4 to see how people move around the site, which pages get read and for how long. We also use Microsoft Clarity, which shows anonymised patterns of use, like where people click or how far they scroll. Neither tool identifies you personally, and both are set to anonymise data wherever the provider allows it.

Cookies used for security checks

Cloudflare Turnstile runs on our get-started form to confirm a real person is submitting it rather than a bot. It leaves a short-lived token rather than tracking you elsewhere online.

Changing your mind

You choose whether to accept optional cookies when the banner first appears, and can change that later by clearing this site’s stored data in your browser and returning. Browser settings also let you block or remove cookies generally, though that may affect how parts of the site behave. Google publishes a separate opt-out tool if you specifically want to stop being tracked by Analytics.

Cookies set by our providers

Google, Microsoft and Cloudflare each set the cookies described above under their own terms, which sit outside our control. We don’t use any cookie here for advertising, and none of them are used to track you across other sites.
